The idea of sustainability is close to my heart. Having had a clothing brand myself I understand the problems clothing manufacture faces. I agree with Vivenne Westwood when she advocates ‘Choose Well, Buy Less & Spend More’ but I am also often led astray by the amazing prices offered on todays high street. ‘Lily Cole’ raised the issues recently at a seminar at MMU and I find the whole subject facinating. The trend for vintage clothing seems to be continuing due to the rise in awareness of sustainability. Clothing made from recycled rubbish is also gathering pace – I love the Ekocycle Clothing (Coke backwards!!) made from recycled bottles. I’ve also been a follower of ‘Junky Styling’ since they began, the shop in Brick Lane sold my clothes along side their own wonderful creations.
Recently my illustrations have been reflecting my interest in clothing manufacture and the Fast Fashion culture. Using discarded fast food packaging and experimenting with it. I think of it as customising my fashion illustrations – I never know what the design will be as it is dependent on the underlying graphics.
